Our History
Alfred John Sheppard Sr.
1932 - 2014

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for two years during the Korean War, receiving his military discharge in Brooklyn. It was there he was introduced to his future wife, Joan (Jason Sheppard’s grandmother), by a fellow serviceman.
Through the GI Bill, he attended McAllister Mortuary School in Manhattan to become a Funeral Director, all while working in the airline industry as a salesman. From a young age, he aspired to be either a Funeral Director or a Pastor—roles he viewed as honorable and impactful.
After graduating from mortuary school, he continued working as an airline salesman during the day while taking on tradesman work in the evenings to support his wife and three children. He went on to open his first funeral home on Broadway in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, after just three years, the untimely passing of his beloved wife forced him to close the business to care for their young children.
As the children grew older, he gradually returned to the funeral trade. Around 1976, he met the former owner of Fairhaven Memorial Chapel, who was looking to retire and sell. This meeting marked the beginning of a lasting legacy.
For over 50 years, he has been a pillar of the community, serving thousands of families across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut with care and compassion.

Jason and his team worked me. They helped make sure that I had the death certificate so I could access my Father's funds and advised on the most economical service possible. Everything I asked for and wanted to lay my father to rest was provided with professional and empathic service. I don't have anyone else to lay to rest in Brooklyn but if I did I would highly recommended Fairhaven. My family had been using Fairhaven for decades and while I’m so sorry for all whom lost loved ones I can’t stand on what’s being posted. Like another poster said it was the grandfather my family has dealt with. I met Jason for the first time two years ago when I lost my mother. While Fairhaven has been like an honorary family member for close to 4 decades, it was my first time being hands on with the protocols of funeral planning. Jason was very patient and informative. Not to mention my mom was a shell of her self when she passed and Fairhaven had her looking like she did in life. They even set her up with an online page that I check into every now and then to write to my mom. That’s how I found these reviews and was shocked by what I read. Again no disrespect to the grieving families, this just wasn’t my experience. Miz Director2020-10-14Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
